Kate Stainsby

Kate will be remembered by all who knew her for her infectious positivity, her love of life, and her adventurous spirit. She participated wholeheartedly in everything she did, including a great many YCC activities and expeditions over the last two decades, not least to Canada, France, Slovenia and New Zealand. Outside of kayaking, she also travelled the world in a variety of ways, including a 10 month circumnavigation of the world in a 72 foot racing yacht as part of the 2004 Global Challenge race. She loved a ‘muddy blast’ on her mountain bike, and instigated many an exciting day out in the countryside, encouraging us all to leave the comfort of our sofas to enjoy a variety of challenges and camaraderie in the great outdoors.

Kate was renowned for her straightforward approach and no-nonsense attitude – and as a friend she could always be relied upon to provide advice and support, along with a healthy dose of humour. As a mother, she was an inspiration. Her relationship with Hannah was a joy, and time spent with them doubled as a masterclass in encouraging the development of a spirited individual.

Donations to the ‘Great North Air Ambulance’ or ‘Just Giving’ will be welcome in Kate’s memory.

* A couple of messages to the club from Jon Stainsby

Friends of Catherine/Kate Stainsby

I am touched by your kind words about my sister. She loved her canoeing and was always talking to me as a fellow canoeist about her latest exploits. I was always in awe of her boundless enthusiasm and lust for life. I know that she had a real freindship with you all and would be humbled by the comments. I am thinking of you all particularly those who shared her last trip. The whole family is grateful for everything that was done and extend their heartfelt thanks.  Please continue to get out there and experience all that life has to offer it is what Kate would want.

I Just wanted to put on record my continued thanks to the club for all they gave to my sister and particular acknowledgement to the courage shown by those who were with Kate on her final rapid. Their straight talking and detail about the events was appreciated by the family. I know that all was done and you have nothing to feel guily about. Catherine spent her last active day with dear friends and feeling more alive than most people ever will. Thank you.

York Canoe Club

On the water and off, YCC is one of the liveliest and best kayak clubs in the country. But you don’t have take our word for it – we’ll admit to being just a tiny bit biased.

Take a look around this site, or better still come and join us in person and find out for yourself!

Weekends and holidays are serious playtime and YCC members make the most of them. Club trips are organised throughout the year. We paddle all over England, Wales and Scotland - some of our ‘regulars’ are the Upper Tees, the Kent, the Lune and the Wharfe, but why stop there? Our more advanced paddlers are spoilt for choice on a wet weekend in winter, with the Dales, Lake District and North Wales all in striking distance for a day of adrenaline fuelled entertainment. Out of season we’re regulars at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham, Teesside, the Tryweryn and the Washburn and we have the pick of some of the finest surf beaches in the Northeast.

If all that sounds a bit run of the mill, how does the paddling abroad grab you? In recent years, YCC paddlers have ripped it up in France, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Canada, Turkey, the USA, Uganda and Zambia and Chile. We’ve even been known to dabble in spot of sea kayaking.

If you need any more information why not catch us at the pool / river or in the pub every Wednesday night. Alternatively you can email us at contactus@yorkcanoeclub.co.uk
